Luxor (called al-Uqá¹£ur in Arabic) also called the City of The Sun Formerly known as Thebes, the great capital of Egypt in the Pharaonic era. Located on the banks of the Nile River, which divides it into two areas The East Bank and The West bank. It is the capital of the southern Governorate of Luxor, Egypt, and away from the Egyptian capital Cairo about 670 km and the northern city of Aswan, about 220 km, and the southern city of Qena about 56 km, and south-west of the city of Hurghada, about 280 km.

 

The foundation of Thebes (Now known as Luxor) is due to the Fourth Dynasty era around the year 2575 BC. until the Middle Kingdom Teba was not more than just a set of simple huts adjacent, although it was used as a cemetery for the burial of the dead. Then the city of Thebes later became the capital of Egypt in the era of the Egyptian family eleventh at the hands of Pharaoh Montuhotep I. The city remained the capital of the state until the fall of the Egyptian pharaohs and Thirty-first family at the hands of the Persians 332 BC. M.

 

Luxor known across the ages with many different names, in its inception it was called the city of “waiest” and then called by the Romans after the name of Thebes, also named as the city of hundred doors, as described by the Greek poet Homer in the Iliad, and also named as the "City of the Sun," "City of Light".
