Mortuary Temple of Mentuhotep

Mortuary Temple of Mentuhotep

Five hundred years before Hatshepsut decided to construct her temple in the valley, the pharaoh Mentuhotep I  had had the same idea and had erected his tomb in line with schemes still typical of Old Kingdom. Mortuary Temple of Mentuhotep is located beneath the cliffs at Deir el Bahari on the west bank of the Nile near the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

This temple is a transition between the Old Kingdom temple of the pyramid, and the New Kingdom House of Millions of Years. The monumental complex of Mentuhotep I was formed of gigantic tomb with a pyramidal tumulus at the center of which was the king`s tomb. The Mortuary Temple of Mentuhotep is dedicated to the sun god Amon-Ra and is located next to the mortuary temple of Mentuhotep II, which served both as an inspiration, and later, a quarry.
