Cairo

Cairo is the capital of Egypt. With a population of approximately 17 million spread over 453 square kilometers, Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt, It is one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East. Cairo is Located near the Nile Delta, It was founded in 969 AD. It is known as the city of a ‘thousands Minarets’ for its majority of Islamic architecture. It was founded by the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century AD. Cairo is also associated with Ancient Egypt as it is close to the ancient cities of Memphis, Giza and Fustat which are near the Great Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza


Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab world, as well as the world's second-oldest institution of higher learning, al-Azhar University.

 


Cairo embraces Egypt’s fascinating cultures. It is showing great pride in its enchanting history. It is famous for its Ancient civilization and some of the world’s most famous monuments including : the Pyramids of Giza, the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world still in existence, (Cheops Pyramid ) The largest Egyptian Pyramid and the other Pyramids of ( Chephren and Mycerinus ) and the Sphinx , Which is the largest monolith Statue in the world 


In Cairo you can find also many markets, Such as the popular Khan El-Khalili Market, found in the heart of the bazaar district. This thriving market with its enthrall colors dates back to 1382. Khan El-Khalili offers lots of locally produced goods such as, jewellery, spices, perfumes, gold, silver, carpets, brass and copper-ware, leather work, glass, ceramics and mashrabiya and various Souvenirs.


Though firmly attached to the past, Cairo is also home to a vibrant modern society. The Midan Tahrir area situated in downtown Cairo area, built in the 19th century under the rule of Khedive Ismail. There also are a number of more modern suburbs including Ma'adi and Heliopolis.


There are lots and lots of attractions that you can find in Cairo, One of them is the Egyptian Musuem which is the home to the worlds’ largest collection of pharaonic antiquities. the Citadel of Saladin, is also a great attraction in Cairo, It was home to Egypt's rulers for some 700 years. Their legacy is a collection of three very different mosques, including the Mosque of Mohamed Ali, several palaces and a couple of terraces with city views.


Cairo occupies a unique site that enabled it to exchange culture with other civilizations. It is the only city in the world that hosts antiquities of four civilizations: Pharaonic, Romanian, Christian and Islamic. One of the oldest Churches in Egypt, Is Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church also known as the Hanging Church. It is located above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo),  The church is approached by 29 steps; early travelers to Cairo dubbed it "the Staircase Church". And from the Islamic culture, One of the most wonderful attraction in Cairo is The great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha or Alabaster Mosque. Situated on the summit of the citadel, this Ottoman mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century, is, with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most visible mosque in Cairo. The mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali's oldest son, who died in 1816.
