Tihna El-Gebel

Tihna El-Gebel

This site is known nowadays as Tihna El-Gebel which was driven from the old Egyptian Name Dehenet which means the forehead. The area is located in the eastern bank of the Nile.

The site is including tombs are called Fraser tombs  or the rock cut tombs, It dates back to the old kingdom and located 2Km from the Nile River, for priests who lived around the forth and the fifth dynasties and it has been called Fraser tombs as a referral for the discoverer of the tombs (Gary Frazer). The site originally contained a lot of tombs dated back to the same time however nowadays you can find only two tombs are opened for public, the first one is the Nika-Ankh tomb who was a priest for goddess Hathor in the reign of Userkaf in the 5th dynasty and the tomb contains a statue for the owner and his wife.

After that, the city also was inhabited and there are 3 temples have been built there, as you can find a small temple dates back to the reign of Ramses II and Merenpetah but the temple is in a very poor case nowadays however you can see in the temple a statue for Hathor because the temple was dedicated for worshipping her.

Later on in the Greco Roman Period the Site gained more importance and was known as Akoris City and you can find above the area of the temples a necropolises dates back to the Greco Roman period but it is very high in the cliff, so they are very risky to be visited, but you can figure out that the tombs are representing the Egyptian and the Greek Style of Art.

The Whole Site is not well preserved, that is why it is not a frequent destination required to be visited by the tourists.
