Pyramid of Amenemhat III

Pyramid of Amenemhat III

The pyramid of Amenemhat III is known also as the Labyrinth. It was one of the most visited sites of the ancient World. Herodotus visited the pyramid during the 5th century B.C., according to his description: The pyramid of Amenemhat III  has 12 covered courts, six in a row facing north and another six facing the south, of which half are underground, and the other half directly above them. The underground storey of the Pyramid contains the tombs of the kings who built the Labyrinth and also the tombs of the sacred crocodiles. And within the upper one, the roof of every chamber, courtyard and gallery is, like the walls, of stone. The walls are covered with carved figures, and each court is built of white marble and surrounded by a colonnade.
