The city of Port said is one of the three cities located on the Suez Canal together with the two cities of Ismailia and Suez. It lies in north east Egypt extending about 30 kilometres along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, north of the Suez Canal. It was established in 1859 during the building of the Suez Canal. The economic base of the city is fishing and industries, like chemicals, processed food, and cigarettes. It is also a fueling station for ships that pass through the Suez Canal. It thrives on being a duty-free port, as well as a tourist resort especially during summer.
The geographical location of Port said has always played an important role in the history of the city and the whole region as it is located in the intersection of the trading routes between the East and the West. The climate of Port said, the same as many cities and ports situated on the Mediterranean Sea, is moderate all year long but it might get a little cold and rainy in the winter.
