El Ishaqi Mosque

El Ishaqi Mosque

The mosque of El Ishaqi is located in El Darb El Ahmar district, near Souq El Silah Street in Cairo. Qijmas al-Ishaqi, being a powerful emir of sultan Qaytbay, managed through several acts of istibdal to acquire the plot he wanted on al-Tabbana street in the Darb al-Ahmar area.

Restored in the early part of the 20th century, this complex was one of the jewels of Mamluk architecture. Its decorated facade reflects the ornate style popular under the reign of Sultan Qayt Bay. El Ishaqi Mosque was built in the period between 1479 and 1481, during the reign of Sultan Qaitbay, by Amir Seif El Din Qijmas, it was built during the Circassian (Burgi) period. At a time when the focus was on extensive decoration and not so much architectural innovation, the mosque of Qijmas still managed to show ingenuity in both its structure and its decoration.
