Amr Ibn El-Aas Mosque

Amr Ibn El-Aas Mosque was built in Al Fustat in 21 A.H. / 642 A.D. by Amr Ibn El Aas to be the first mosque in Egypt and in Africa. Amr Ibn El Aas was the leader of an invading Arab army.  He was the Arab general who conquest Egypt to fight against the Roman and He was hailed by the Copts as a liberator. Then he was appointed governor by the Caliph. Amr founded a new capital instead of Alexandria, and that was Al Fustat. The mosque was built in Al-Fusá¹­aá¹­. 

 

Amr Ibn El-Aas Mosque was of great importance in Islamic Egypt as it was the first university 600 years before Al Azhar mosque, the lessons` circles were held for the public, students and specialists in Quran, language and jurisprudence. The mosque was restored by Saladin in 1172 after the city of al-Fusṭāṭ was burned by crusaders. After periodic cycles of ruin and restoration, the mosque was left to decay with the coming of Napoleon Bonaparte’s troops to Cairo in 1798.
